Keep John Nixon
Lima City Council President

Campaign Kick-Off Address
Sunday, September 09, 2007
Lima Firefighter's Memorial Museum

I would like to thank everyone for coming today. One aspect of the job of City Council President is that you don’t get to pick the weather! You also don’t get to pick the issues that come before you and your fellow Council Members. If we only had to deal with “sunny, nice day” issues everyone would run for the positions!

I am running for President of Lima City Council for many reasons:

  • To give voters and taxpayers a voice in City Hall.
    • Sometimes this means giving voice to concerns and opinions that I may not personally agree with but I have a demonstrated record of speaking up – when it was best for Lima.
    • Having been involved with 16 City Budgets I have demonstrated a fiscally conservative approach while trying to maximize services and doing what is best for Lima residents.

  • To continue making Safety Services a priority among services this City provides to its residents.
    • Safety Services have been my highest priority since I entered City Council in 1990.
    • As Finance Committee Chairman there have been 2 separate occasions where funding was restored to avoid Safety Services lay offs – because it was best for Lima.

  • To continue making Economic Development a priority in Lima.
    • I have been involved in the creation of business parks, non-withdrawal annexations, creating legislation to allow Special Use Permits, Tax Abatements and a variety of legislation that has allowed for business development when it is best for Lima.
    • City Council needs to be focused on “moving at the speed of business” when considering legislation that affects business development.

  • To foster a spirit of cooperation within the City and beyond the City.
    • Over 16 years I have worked with residents throughout this City to help resolve issues.
    • I am the only candidate who has worked with 3 Council Presidents, 29 Council People and many Township Trustees and County Commissioners.
    • I have a demonstrated history of working with people; putting personal differences aside and doing what is best for Lima.

All of the above have been my priorities since entering politics in 1989. I have a demonstrated record of keeping them as priorities. I have been committed to my priorities and consistent in my voting for over 16 years.

I have executed my Council duties with honesty and integrity. I have been committed to and actively pursued making Lima the best it can be. The residents of Lima deserve a Council President that has demonstrated character and professionalism. I recently heard a friend use the axiom: “Past is prologue”. What has happened in the past will likely repeat itself in the future. I think that says a lot in this campaign: I have demonstrated honesty and integrity in my position and I will continue to do so in the future!

Over the past 16 years on Lima City Council there have been many serious and difficult decisions that I have been involved with. Issues that have affected real people and have had real impacts on this community.

When I consider issues I look at the following:

  • “Is this decision good public policy?”
  • “Will it be a good decision 10 years from now?”
  • “Is this decision what’s best for Lima and it’s residents?”

In the coming weeks, I encourage residents to visit our website VoteJohnNixon.com and submit questions or call me at home @ 419-228-1118.  My campaign headquarters remains where it has been located since October 1994 – 1729 Sherry Lee Drive, Lima, Ohio.

I am asking Lima residents to allow me to continue “giving them a voice in City government” and consider voting to Keep John Nixon Council President, "its what’s best for Lima!"
